Working with parents to support each child’s language acquisition and emergent literacy is an essential aspect of pedagogical practice, but it can likewise be a challenging communica tive challenge for early childhood educators (EEC). Parents differ in their knowledge of language acquisition, and as such the EEC must be prepared to find each parent’s starting pointing, so that each parent receives knowledge and methods that will support the child’s language development at home. In my talk, I will focus on how EEC’s can support the EEC-parent relationship with regards to supporting language. We will overview research on the impact of parenting interventions and how to build a trusting relationship with parents, as well as review many practical suggestions on how EEC’s can communicate important messages about language in an effective way. There will also be time set aside for small group discussions and question.
Fredag: Oplæg ved Noomi Matthiesen, Lektor, Institut for Kommunikation og Psykologi
Trust and the art of working together with parents Collaboration between parents and educational professionals in daycare is increasingly seen as a way to reduce the risks associated with early childhood, and is thus considered a medium for creating the best conditions for preschool children’s well-being, learning and development. Mutual trust is an essential foundation
for this collaboration. However, there are several factors that can threaten and impair the trust between parents and daycare professionals. This presentation describes these factors and suggests approaches for enhancing trust in the collaboration relationship in general and when trust is being eroded.
